a ا

Algerian Darja · particle

“a” (ا) is a particle in Algerian Darja meaning vocative particle (hey, oh).

Meanings

  1. vocative particle (hey, oh)

Usage

A is the most common vocative particle in darja. It goes directly before the name or title of the person being addressed: a khouya (hey, brother), a Samir, a lemma. It plays the same role as ya, but it is more familiar and more spontaneous in speech. In English it is rendered as "hey" or left untranslated. In writing, it is often noted آ or ا, sometimes attached to the following word. It is then easily mistaken for an article or a typo.

Example

آ خويا، أرواح لهنا

a khouya, arwa7 lhna

“Hey, brother, come here.”

How to write it in Latin letters
