chouf asidi شوف اسيدي
Algerian Darja · expression
“chouf asidi” (شوف اسيدي) is an expression in Algerian Darja meaning exclamation of surprise.
Meanings
- exclamation of surprise
- ironic, mocking remark
Usage
Chouf a sidi literally means "look, sir". It is used to express surprise or astonishment at an unexpected or absurd situation. Among young people, the expression is mostly ironic: it is thrown out to mock a pretentious attitude or inappropriate behaviour. Its popularity owes much to Algerian comedy films. Despite the "sidi", it is not addressed to anyone in particular: it serves as a comment, not as a form of address. The tone is informal, even theatrical. It is therefore out of place in a serious context.
