tnai تنائي

Algerian Darja · noun

“tnai” (تنائي) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning duo of performers or comedians.

Meanings

  1. duo of performers or comedians
  2. pair of people, tandem

Usage

Tnaï is the common Algerian pronunciation of the Classical Arabic word "thunâ'î": in many regions, "th" is pronounced "t". It is used mainly for a duo of artists, comedians or actors, especially those in Ramadan sketches and series. It often appears in compliments such as "ahsan tnaï" (the best duo). The register is that of the media and online comments rather than familiar conversation. For a simple pair of objects, zoudj is used instead. Watch out for a pitfall: the adjective sense "bilateral" belongs to Standard Arabic and is not used in everyday darja.

Example

هادو أحسن تنائي في الجزائر، يضحكوا بزاف

hadou ahsan tnai f dzayer, ydahkou bezzaf

“These two are the best duo in Algeria, they're very funny.”
