Algerian Darja · expression
“39ouba” (عقوبة) is an expression in Algerian Darja meaning wish: may it happen to you too.
Meanings
- wish: may it happen to you too
- coming up next, next milestone
- sanction, punishment (formal register)
Usage
In darja, 3qouba is used mainly as a well-wishing formula. One says 3qouba lik or 3qoubtek to a single person at a wedding or celebration: "may your turn come". The word is also used to wish for a next milestone: 3qouba l-million, "here's to the million next", or 3qouba l-3id, "until the next feast". The formula is polite and warm. It is part of the usual congratulations. The pitfall for an English speaker: the standard meaning "sanction, punishment" exists, but it belongs to the official register. In a festive conversation, the word never has that negative meaning.
Example
مبروك عليك، عقوبة ليك يا ختي
mabrouk 3lik, 3qouba lik ya khti
