ana 3amek انا عمك

Algerian Darja · expression

“ana 3amek” (انا عمك) is an expression in Algerian Darja meaning I'm above you, I dominate you.

Meanings

  1. I'm above you, I dominate you
  2. I'm the best (bragging)

Usage

Literally "I am your (paternal) uncle". The expression ana 3mak is used to assert superiority over someone: in an argument, a challenge, a game or at football, it is thrown out to say you have the upper hand. The register is informal, often playful between friends, but it can sound provocative or contemptuous toward a stranger. In the feminine it is ana 3amtek ("I am your aunt"). It has nothing to do with family ties, so it should not be taken literally. It is heard mostly among young people and on social media.

Example

غلبتك فالكارطة، أنا عمك!

ghlabtek fel karta, ana 3amek!

“I beat you at cards, I'm your master!”
