chaabi شعبي
Algerian Darja · adjective

Meanings
- popular, of the people
- chaabi music (Algiers genre)
- simple, modest
Usage
Chaâbi describes what belongs to the people or to modest social classes: a working-class neighborhood is called "7ouma cha3bia" or "7ay cha3bi", and a dish or a market can also be cha3bi. Used as a noun, el chaâbi also refers to the musical genre born in Algiers, associated with celebrations and weddings. The word is not pejorative in itself, but it can signal a simple background, as opposed to well-off neighborhoods. The feminine is cha3bia. Pitfall for an English speaker: the usual meaning is not "famous" or "liked by everyone". It means "of the people", "working-class".
