lala لالا
Algerian Darja · interjection
“lala” (لالا) is an interjection in Algerian Darja meaning no, no (emphatic refusal).
Meanings
- no, no (emphatic refusal)
- no, not at all
Usage
Lala is the doubling of the negation la and is used to contradict or refuse emphatically. It goes at the start of a sentence, often before a correction: "lala, machi haka", no, it's not like that. Depending on tone, it can be polite and gentle or flatly categorical. It should not be confused with lalla, which means "madam" and is a respectful title before a woman's first name. In arabizi, the two words can be written the same way; only context distinguishes them. The register is spoken and informal.
Example
لالا، ماشي هكا قالها
lala, machi haka galha
“No no, that's not how he said it.”
