mana9derch مانقدرش

Algerian Darja · expression

“mana9derch” (مانقدرش) is an expression in Algerian Darja meaning I can't.

Meanings

  1. I can't
  2. I can't stand it

Usage

Mana9derch is the negative first-person form of the verb 9der (to be able), wrapped in the ma… ch negation typical of darja. It is followed directly by an imperfective verb, with no "to": mana9derch nji (I can't come). Used alone, it expresses helplessness or refusal: "I can't take any more", "I can't stand that". Common register, used in all settings. The 9 stands for the q sound, often pronounced g in some regions (managderch). Don't confuse it with mana3refch (I don't know): 9der is about ability or strength, not learned know-how.

Example

اليوم مانقدرش نجي، عندي خدمة.

lyoum mana9derch nji, 3andi khedma.

“Today I can't come, I have work.”
