Algerian Darja · noun

“tay” (تاي) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning tea.

Meanings

  1. tea

Usage

Tay (or atay) means tea, especially green tea with mint served in small glasses. The word is used mainly in western and southern Algeria: kas tay, "a glass of tea". Elsewhere, and notably in Algiers, chay is more common. Tea is associated with hospitality and long conversations. Pitfall: in online comments, the same Arabic spelling is also used to write "Tae", a nickname of a singer in the group BTS, which has nothing to do with the drink.
