Meanings

  1. Sunni, of Sunni Islam

Usage

Sonni refers to what relates to Sunni Islam, the branch to which the vast majority of Moroccans belong. The word comes from religious language and is used mainly in discussions about religion, on radio, on television or in online debates. In daily life it is rarely said, since being Sunni goes without saying for most speakers. The feminine is sonniya and the plural sonniyin. Do not confuse it with the verb sanna (to sharpen) or with "sni", an adaptation of French "signer", which is sometimes written the same way in Arabic.
