Moroccan Darija · interjection

“tfeddel” (تفضل) is an interjection in Moroccan Darija meaning please, come in.

Meanings

  1. please, come in
  2. help yourself, here you are
  3. (verb) you prefer

Usage

Tfeddel is the polite formula par excellence for inviting someone: to come in, to sit down, to help themselves, or when handing them something. It agrees with the person addressed: tfeddel for a man, tfeddli for a woman, tfeddlu for several people. It is often paired with merhba. It is not a "thank you". It should also be distinguished from the verb form tfeddel, second person of feddel, "to prefer". For example, tfeddel hada 3la hada means "you prefer this one to that one".
