Usage
Anzas is the common name for the pear in Tunisia. It is a collective noun: it refers to the fruit in general or an unspecified quantity (nchri chwaya anzas, "I'm buying a few pears"). For the tree, the form in -a, anzasa, is used, which can also refer to a single fruit. It is often heard in lists of summer fruits, alongside khoukh (peach) and touffeh (apple), and followed by the name of a local variety. An English speaker may not recognize the word, which is very different from Eastern forms. With the article, one often says l'anzas or lanzas.
