haa هاا

Tunisian Derja · interjection

“haa” (هاا) is an interjection in Tunisian Derja meaning hey, to call someone.

Meanings

  1. hey, to call someone
  2. here, there you go

Usage

Haa is an interjection used to call out, often placed before a first name to address someone directly, with a nuance of insistence, reproach or complaint: "hey, so-and-so, listen to us!" The vowel is readily lengthened in writing (haa, haaa) to render the intonation. The register is informal and spoken, and it is very frequent in online comments addressed to a public figure. Depending on the intonation, it can also accompany a gesture of handing over an object. Not to be confused with haw, which means "here it is, here he is".

Example

هاا سامي، اسمعني شوية!

haa Sami, esma3ni chwaya!

“Hey, Sami, listen to me for a second!”
