ta تا
Tunisian Derja · particle
“ta” (تا) is a particle in Tunisian Derja meaning come on, but really (emphasis, protest).
Meanings
- come on, but really (emphasis, protest)
- so what, even if
Usage
Ta is a small discourse particle, very frequent in speech, placed at the start of a sentence or clause. It is used to insist, protest or play something down, somewhat like "come on", "but really" or "so what" in English. It is heard mostly in rhetorical questions and familiar reproaches: ta chbik ? (come on, what's wrong with you?), ta ech bech yṣir ? (so what's going to happen?). It has no lexical meaning of its own: its value depends on intonation. Informal register. Pitfall: do not confuse it with the preposition meaning "until", and do not translate it word for word.
Example
تا شبيك؟ علاش زعفان؟
ta chbik ? 3lech za3fan ?
“Come on, what's wrong with you? Why are you upset?”
