3ad عاد
Algerian Darja · adverb
“3ad” (عاد) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning only then, at last.
Meanings
- only then, at last
- just (recently)
Usage
In darja, 3ad is an adverb of time placed before the verb. It indicates that an action happens late, or later than expected: "drouk 3ad fhemt" (only now have I understood). It can also mark a very recent action: "3ad wsalt" (I have just arrived). The past tense that follows is then often rendered with "just" or with "only when". Do not confuse it with the Standard Arabic verb 3ad (to return), found in written or journalistic texts.
Example
البارح عاد وصل من فرانسا
lbare7 3ad wsal men fransa
“He only arrived from France yesterday.”
