3ada عادة

Algerian Darja · noun

“3ada” (عادة) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning habit.

Meanings

  1. habit
  2. custom, tradition
  3. usually, normally

Usage

3ada means "habit": "hadi 3adtou" (it's his habit), "kima l3ada" (as usual), "3la 3adtek" (as you're used to). In the plural, l3adat means customs and traditions (l3adat w taqalid). The adverbial sense "usually" exists (3ada ma…), but it comes more from Standard Arabic; in speech people more often say "dima" or "kima l3ada". Be careful not to confuse 3ada with 3adi, which is very common and means "normal, no big deal, it's fine".

Example

kima l3ada, ja m3attal
