3andek عاندك
Algerian Darja · interjection
“3andek” (عاندك) is an interjection in Algerian Darja meaning watch out!, beware.
Meanings
- watch out!, beware
- don't you dare
- you have, you've got
Usage
In Algeria, the word 3andek is first used to warn: "watch out!", "be careful". It is used alone when danger is near, or followed by a present-tense verb to forbid something: 3andek t3awedha, "don't you do that again". The tone is often that of a parent or an elder. Pitfall for an English speaker: the same word keeps its basic meaning of "you have" or "at your place" (3andek drahem ?, "do you have money?"). Context and intonation decide. The spelling with an alif after the 3 reflects a more Moroccan pronunciation. The feminine and plural are 3andek for a woman and 3andkom for several people.
Example
عندك تطيح، الأرض زالقة
3andek tti7, l'ard zal9a
“Watch out, you'll fall, the floor is slippery.”
