ajjel اجل

Algerian Darja · verb

“ajjel” (اجل) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to postpone, put off.

Meanings

  1. to postpone, put off
  2. to delay, defer

Usage

The verb ajjel means "to postpone" or "to defer": an exam, an appointment, a party, a match. It is most common in school, administrative and sports contexts: ajjlou l'examen, "they postponed the exam". The register is a bit more refined than that of its colloquial equivalents, akhkher ("to delay") and the loanword reporta. The related noun, ajal, means a deadline or time limit: akher ajal, "final deadline". Do not confuse it with the word ajal meaning "the end of one's life".

Example

أجّلو الامتحان للسيمانة الجاية.

ajjlou l'imti7an l simana jaya.

“They postponed the exam until next week.”
