Algerian Darja · expression

“akhtini” (اخطيني) is an expression in Algerian Darja meaning leave me alone, give me a break.

Meanings

  1. leave me alone, give me a break
  2. get away from me

Usage

Akhtini is formed from the verb khta / yokhti, "to leave, to step away from", followed by the pronoun -ni ("me"). It is a very familiar expression for pushing away someone insistent or intrusive, often in an annoyed tone. It is readily reinforced: akhtini men rassek, akhtini barka. It can also mean, more harshly, "get out of my life", for example in a couple's quarrel. It is used among close people, in an irritated tone. In the plural, one says akhtouna ("leave us alone"). With someone you respect, a gentler phrase such as khellini is better.
