Meanings
- exclamation of surprise or disbelief
- sign of annoyance
Usage
Awah is a very expressive spoken interjection. It is used when news is shocking, surprising or seems unbelievable, roughly like "what?!" or "no way!" in English. The more the vowel is stretched (awaaaah), the stronger the reaction, which explains the elongated spellings online. It can also express annoyance or indignant refusal. The register is informal: it suits conversation and social media, not formal writing. Note that it does not mean "yes": do not confuse it with wah, which means "yes".
