bakor باكور

Algerian Darja · noun

“bakor” (باكور) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning early fig, first crop.

Meanings

  1. early fig, first crop
  2. fig (in general)

Usage

Bakor (or bakour) refers to the first figs of the season, the early (breba) figs, which ripen in early summer before the main harvest. They are generally bigger and highly prized. The word is thus contrasted with karmous, which means the ordinary late-summer fig. Depending on region and speaker, bakor can be used more broadly for fresh figs in general. It is useful to remember this seasonal distinction between the two terms. It is often used as a collective: chrit el bakor, "I bought early figs".

Example

البكور خرج هاد العام بكري.

el bakor khrej had el 3am bekri.

“The early figs came out early this year.”
