bendir بندير
Algerian Darja · noun
“bendir” (بندير) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning bendir, frame drum.
Meanings
- bendir, frame drum
Usage
The bendir is a large frame drum, made of wood and stretched skin, often fitted with a snare that vibrates. It is everywhere in popular music, celebrations, weddings, Sufi ceremonies, and chaâbi or Bedouin music. The plural is bnader. People say "dreb el bendir" for "to play the bendir". In English, the word bendir is usually kept, because "tambourine" is imprecise: it has no jingles like the European tambourine. Figuratively and informally, "bendir" also evokes partying, noise or racket.
Example
في العرس كانو يضربو البندير طول الليل
