bouya بويا
Algerian Darja · noun
“bouya” (بويا) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning my father.
Meanings
- my father
- respectful term for an elder
Usage
Bouya means "my father" and carries the first-person possessive. It is used mainly in western Algeria and in some inland regions. Elsewhere, notably in Algiers, people say "baba" instead. For "your father", the corresponding form is "bouk" or "babak". The word is affectionate and respectful. It can also be used to address an older man, as one would say "ammi". Do not confuse it with "khouya" (my brother), which is built the same way. The sense "chameleon" sometimes reported is not common.
