choukran شكرا
Algerian Darja · interjection
“choukran” (شكرا) is an interjection in Algerian Darja meaning thank you.
Meanings
- thank you
Usage
Choukran means "thank you". The word comes from Standard Arabic, but it is common in Algeria, especially in writing, on social media and in a somewhat polished register. It is constructed with 3la to give the reason for the thanks: choukran 3la had l'khedma (thank you for this work). In speech, Algerians often thank people differently: saha, yaatik saha, baraka Allahou fik, or the French merci, which is very widely used. Choukran can therefore sound slightly formal in casual conversation.
Example
