dda ادى

Algerian Darja · verb

“dda” (ادى) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to take, carry away.

Meanings

  1. to take, carry away
  2. to take someone along
  3. to perform (a role, duty)

Usage

In darja, the verb "dda / yeddi" primarily means "to take, take with oneself" or "to take someone along": "eddi m3ak", "take it with you"; "ddah l sbitar", "he took him to the hospital". It is the opposite of "jab" (to bring, bring back). The sense "to perform, fulfil" (a role, prayer, a duty) comes from standard Arabic and is found in comments or careful speech, for example for an actor who played his role well. Pitfall: in speech, "dda" almost never has this second sense.

Example

دّي معاك المفتاح كي تخرج

eddi m3ak lmeftah ki tokhroj

“Take the key with you when you go out.”
