Algerian Darja · noun

“deglet” (دقلة) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning deglet nour date variety.

Meanings

  1. deglet nour date variety
  2. fresh date, date in general

Usage

Degla mainly means the date and most often appears in the expression deglet nour. This translucent, honeyed variety is grown in the oases of southern Algeria, notably around Biskra and Tolga, and Algerians are proud of it. The generic word for "dates" remains tmar. Degla is used to refer to the variety or, in some regions, to the date in general. It is very present during Ramadan, when the fast is broken with dates and milk. The g is pronounced hard, which gives the Latin spellings with g.
