familya فاميليا
Algerian Darja · noun
“familya” (فاميليا) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning family, good family.
Meanings
- family, good family
- well-bred, respectable (person)
Usage
A very common word, especially in the West, alongside "3ayla". It is heard mostly in the expressions "wlid familya" and "bent familya", "son / daughter of a good family". They describe a person who is well brought up, polite and respectful, and often serve as a compliment. Here familya works almost like an invariable adjective: "rajel familya", "a proper gentleman". The register is informal and affectionate. The pitfall is to see only the neutral meaning "family": the idea of good upbringing clearly dominates.
Example
