ferd فرد
Algerian Darja · noun
“ferd” (فرد) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning individual, person.
Meanings
- individual, person
- member (of a family, a group)
Usage
Ferd means a person taken on their own, especially in the phrase ferd men…: ferd men l-3a2ila (a member of the family), ferd men ech-cha3b (someone from the people). The register is rather neutral or formal, because the word comes from Standard Arabic. In everyday conversation, people more readily say wa7ed (someone) or bnadem (a person). Do not confuse it with ferda, "one of a pair" (a shoe, a sock). Other regional meanings exist, but they are uncertain and are not included here.
Example
كل فرد في العايلة عاونها
kol ferd f l3ayla 3awenha
