fin فين

Algerian Darja · adverb

“fin” (فين) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning where (interrogative).

Meanings

  1. where (interrogative)
  2. where, wherever (relative)

Usage

Fin is the interrogative adverb "where", used mainly in western Algeria, notably around Oran and Tlemcen. In the rest of the country, people mostly use win, which has the same meaning. One says "fin rak?" (where are you?), "mnin" or "men fin" (from where?). Combined with ma, it works as a relative: "fin ma tamchi" means "everywhere you go". A learner aiming for darja that is understood everywhere will do better to use win first.

Example

فين راك؟ راني نستناك

fin rak? rani nestennak

“Where are you? I'm waiting for you.”
