gasba قصبة
Algerian Darja · noun
“gasba” (قصبة) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning reed, cane.
Meanings
- reed, cane
- reed flute
- citadel, old town
Usage
Gasba (or qasba) first means the reed and the hollow stem taken from it. By extension, it is the traditional reed flute, very present in Bedouin and Chaoui music, often accompanied by the bendir. Pronounced with a q, the same word refers to a citadel or old town, and above all to the Casbah of Algiers, which is then written with a capital letter as a place name. Context makes it possible to tell these senses apart. The pronunciation with g is typical of the East and the interior. Avoid the sense "renovated", which is poorly attested.
Example
كان يضرب القصبة في العرس طول الليل
kan yedreb el gasba fel 3ors toul el lil
“He played the reed flute at the wedding all night long.”
