“9asba” (قصبة) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning reed, cane.

Meanings

  1. reed, cane
  2. reed flute (gasba)
  3. kasbah, citadel

Usage

The word 9asba first means the reed and, by extension, a stalk or hollow tube. It appears in "nos 9asba", which describes a mid-height shoe or boot. Pronounced gasba in the inland regions, it also names the reed flute of Bedouin music. With the article, el Kasba refers to a city's citadel, in particular the government district of Tunis and its square. For an English speaker, the word "kasbah" often evokes only this last sense. In everyday conversation, however, the reed comes first.
