gourbi گربي
Algerian Darja · noun
“gourbi” (گربي) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning hut, rudimentary shack.
Meanings
- hut, rudimentary shack
- shanty, makeshift dwelling
- hovel, wretched home (pejorative)
Usage
Gourbi refers to a basic dwelling made of stones, earth, branches or sheet metal, first in the countryside, then by extension the shacks of informal neighbourhoods. The word is also used pejoratively or mockingly for a small, dirty or poorly kept home: a neglected apartment is called a gourbi. The usual plural is gra'bi or gourbiyat depending on the region. The word has passed into informal French with the meaning "hovel". A French speaker will therefore recognise it, but in darja it often keeps its concrete meaning of a rural hut.
Example
كانو ساكنين في گربي فوق الجبل.
