Qraya, or graya with the g of the west and of rural areas, means studies and schooling in general, from school to university. The word derives from the verb qra, which means both "to study" and "to read". It is often paired with khedma: la qraya la khedma, "neither studies nor work". Examples of use: kammel qrayto, "he has finished his studies", and hbes men qraya, "he dropped out of school". The sense of "reading" exists but is secondary.
