Usage
Hassi means a well, especially in the South and the High Plateaus. The word is very common in place names: Hassi Messaoud, Hassi R'Mel, Hassi Bahbah. For many northern Algerians, it first evokes these towns, linked to oil and gas, rather than the common noun. In the North, bir is more commonly used for a well. The common plural is hassiyat. In a text, check whether hassi is followed by a proper noun: it is then almost always a locality.
