hsel حصل

Algerian Darja · verb

“hsel” (حصل) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to be stuck, trapped.

Meanings

  1. to be stuck, trapped
  2. to get caught, trapped
  3. to happen (standard register)

Usage

In darja, hsel mainly means "to be stuck, unable to get out of it". It is said of a key in a lock, a car in the mud or a person in a difficult situation: rani hasel, "I'm stuck, I'm in a mess". It can also mean "to get caught". The sense "to happen, to occur", as in hada ma hsel, is that of Standard Arabic: it is found in writing and in a formal register. Pitfall: in conversation, do not spontaneously translate it as "to happen".
