Meanings
- asking God for forgiveness
- repeated phrase "astaghfirou Allah"
Usage
Istighfar is a religious term used as-is in Algeria, in speech and in writing. It means asking God for forgiveness, especially through the phrase "astaghfirou Allah", which is often repeated with prayer beads. It appears in pious advice ("kether mel istighfar", "ask for forgiveness often") or to encourage someone going through hardship. In conversation, the phrase itself also works as an exclamation to show disapproval or to refuse to speak ill of someone. The register is neutral and respectful. The word is not an apology addressed to a person: for that, use samhni or smahli.
