jami جامي
Algerian Darja · adverb
“jami” (جامي) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning never.
Meanings
- never
- not at all
Usage
Jami is a borrowing from French "jamais", fully integrated into Darja and very common. It is used with a past-tense verb to say that something never happened, often without the negation ma… ch: jami rouht (I have never gone there). It can also appear with the full negation, for emphasis. On its own as an answer, it means "never!" or "no way". The register is informal and spoken. It coexists with the Arabic 3oumri ("in my life"), which is more expressive in a personal story.
Example
جامي شفت كيما هكا
jami chouft kima hakka
“I have never seen anything like this.”
