Meanings

  1. rhythmic music and dance with krakebs
  2. metal castanets (qraqeb)

Usage

The qarqabou is a traditional Algerian music and dance, linked to the South and to brotherhoods of sub-Saharan origin, played with large metal castanets, the qraqeb, and drums. The rhythm is repetitive and driving. By extension, the word evokes a noisy, festive atmosphere, even a racket. Outside the musical context, it is used ironically for a chaotic scene or an overly rowdy party: ghi fi qarqabou, "nothing but a racket". The word belongs to the everyday register and is related to the verb qarqeb, "to make noise, to clatter".
