Usage
Kaskrout is a borrowing from French "casse-croûte", fully integrated into darja. It refers above all to a sandwich made in half a baguette, filled with whatever you like: omelette, merguez, fries, tuna... A notable example is the kaskrout karantika, the chickpea flatbread served in bread with harissa, a specialty of the Oran region and Algiers. The word is masculine and is informal, everyday usage. It is used with verbs like kla (to eat) or dar (to make). Note: it does not mean just any snack, but specifically a sandwich.
