“khourg yekhreg” (خرق يخرق) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to pierce, to make a hole in.
Meanings
- to pierce, to make a hole in
- to break (a rule, a law)
Usage
Khreg, present tense yekhreg, means to pierce or make a hole in something: a wall, a tyre, an ear, fabric. The participle makhroug, "holed, pierced", is very common for a garment, a sock, a bag or an inner tube. Figuratively, khreg means to break a rule, as in khreg el qanoun. This latter use is more formal and comes from standard Arabic. Pitfall for a beginner: in speech, khreg can be confused with khredj, "to go out". Context tells them apart.
Example
خرق الحيط باش يعلّق المراية.
khreg el 7it bach y3alleg el mraya.
“He drilled a hole in the wall to hang the mirror.”
