Meanings

  1. bottom (of a container, well)
  2. ground, floor
  3. roots, origin (figurative)

Usage

El 9a3 refers to the bottom of a container, a well or the sea, and more broadly the lower part, the ground: fel 9a3 ("all the way at the bottom, on the floor"). Figuratively, it expresses the idea of roots and lineage, as in the praising expression bent el 9a3 wel ba3, said of a woman from a good family, well rooted. The word is also used for a level at its lowest, for example when talking about prices or morale. The sense of "backside" exists in some regional dialects: it is colloquial and best avoided. In the East and the South, the pronunciation ga3 is also heard.
