Algerian Darja · adverb
“lbareh” (البارح) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning yesterday.
Meanings
- yesterday
Usage
Lbareh is the usual word for "yesterday" throughout Algeria. It can be placed freely at the start or end of a sentence. For "the day before yesterday", say qbel lbareh. It is combined with ta3 to describe something: l7alqa ta3 lbareh, "yesterday's episode". It should not be confused with the noun lbareh meaning "last night", which some speakers use. In practice, context decides, and the meaning "yesterday" clearly dominates. Its opposites are lyoum, "today", and ghodwa, "tomorrow".
Example
البارح ما خرجتش من الدار
lbareh ma kherjetch mel dar
“Yesterday I didn't leave the house.”
