lhih لهيه

Algerian Darja · adverb

“lhih” (لهيه) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning over there.

Meanings

  1. over there
  2. abroad, elsewhere (by allusion)

Usage

Lhih refers to a place far from the speaker, like "over there". It contrasts with hna (here). It is used mostly in the centre, notably in Algiers. Elsewhere, people more readily say tamma or temmak. It combines with prepositions: "men lhih" (from there), "l lhih" (towards there). In conversation, it can implicitly refer to a place known to both speakers, often abroad or another region. The register is familiar and neutral. Note: it is not a demonstrative pronoun; it only indicates a place.

Example

حط الكرطون لهيه حدا الباب.

hott lkarton lhih hda lbab.

“Put the box over there, next to the door.”
