madam مادام
Algerian Darja · conjunction
“madam” (مادام) is a conjunction in Algerian Darja meaning since, seeing that.
Meanings
- since, seeing that
- as long as
- (loanword) madam; wife
Usage
Madam introduces a cause presented as already established. It is equivalent to "since" or "seeing that": "madam rak hna, aawenni". It can also mean "as long as". It goes at the start of a clause, followed by a complete sentence. Do not confuse it with the homograph madame, a loanword from French. That loanword refers to a lady, a female teacher, or, colloquially, a wife: madamti means "my wife". This is the sense that explains the English gloss "my wife". It is less frequent in writing than the conjunction.
Example
مادام راك فارغ، أرواح عاوني.
madam rak fare3, arwa7 3aweni.
“Since you have nothing to do, come and help me.”
