Algerian Darja · noun
“matar” (مطار) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning airport.
Meanings
- airport
Usage
Matar means the airport. In casual conversation, many Algerians say l'aéroport instead, pronounced the French way. Matar is still common and dominates in writing, in announcements and on television. One says l'matar ("the airport") and rah l'matar ("he went to the airport"). It is also cited with a city name: matar Wahran ("Oran airport"). Algiers airport is often called simply Houari Boumediene. The word has no particular pitfall, apart from its plural matarat, rarely used in speech.
