moket موكات
Algerian Darja · noun
“moket” (موكات) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning fitted carpet.
Meanings
- fitted carpet
- rug, carpet
Usage
Moket is an adapted borrowing from French "moquette", very common in Algeria. The word refers to textile floor covering, but also, more broadly, a large industrial rug laid in the living room. The plural is moketat. It is distinguished from zerbiya, the traditional woven rug. It is heard a lot during big cleanings, when the moket is washed with water on the terrace before summer or the holidays. Pitfall: the word can refer to a removable rug, not only to carpet glued to the floor.
Example
ماما غسلت الموكات في السطح
mama ghaslet el moket fi sta7
“Mom washed the carpet on the terrace.”
