ndhif نضيف

Algerian Darja · adjective

“ndhif” (نضيف) is an adjective in Algerian Darja meaning clean, neat.

Meanings

  1. clean, neat
  2. decent, clean (content, behavior)
  3. great, well done (informal)

Usage

Ndhif (nḍif) means "clean". Online, it is very often written with ض instead of ظ, and Algerian pronunciation in fact merges the two sounds. In its basic sense, it is used for a place, clothes or a person: el dar ndhifa (the house is clean). It also describes what is morally acceptable: contenu ndhif (content without vulgarity). Among young people, it can be used as approval, roughly like "spot on, awesome". The feminine is ndhifa, the plural is ndhaf. Do not confuse it with the verb form "we add", which is spelled the same in Standard Arabic.

Example

الدار نضيفة اليوم

ed-dar ndhifa el youm

“The house is clean today.”
