ommi امي
Algerian Darja · noun
“ommi” (امي) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning my mother.
Meanings
- my mother
- mom (formal, in prayers)
Usage
Ommi means "my mother". The possessive is built into the word. In Algeria, it belongs mostly to a formal or affectionate register: it is used in prayers ("rabbi yarham ommi", may God have mercy on my mother), in writing and in songs. In everyday conversation, people much more often say yemma or mma, both to talk about their mother and to call her. Ommi is hardly used to address her directly. Do not confuse it with the adjective ommi, "illiterate".
Example
ربي يحفظلي أمي ويخليهالي
