qed قد

Algerian Darja · noun

“qed” (قد) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning size, measure.

Meanings

  1. size, measure
  2. as much as (qedd ma)
  3. equal, of the same size

Usage

Qedd, often pronounced "gedd", means size or measure: "qeddi" (my size), "qedd-ach ?" (what size? how much?). The phrase "qedd ma" means "as much as": "dir qedd ma tqder" (do as much as you can). "Qedd qedd" means "the same, on an equal footing". It is often used for clothes, ages or quantities: "qeddou" (he is my age, he is my size). Pitfall: do not confuse it with the Standard Arabic particle "qad" ("already, perhaps"), which is not used in spoken Darja.

Example

هاد السروال قدّي

had sserwal qeddi

“These trousers are my size.”
