r5isa رخيصة

Algerian Darja · adjective

“r5isa” (رخيصة) is an adjective in Algerian Darja meaning not expensive, cheap.

Meanings

  1. not expensive, cheap
  2. low, worthless (figurative)

Usage

Feminine of rkhis, "not expensive". The plural is rkhas. The adjective agrees with a feminine noun: lkhodra rkhisa, "the vegetables are cheap". The opposite is ghalia, "expensive". The related verb, rkhas, means "to drop in price". Figuratively, it describes a low or worthless method or behavior: turuq rkhisa, "cheap methods". Applied to a person, especially a woman, it becomes pejorative and hurtful. It should then be avoided, like the English "cheap". In the commercial sense, however, the word is neutral and very common.

Example

الطماطم راهي رخيصة اليوم في السوق

tmatem rahi r5isa lyoum f souk

“Tomatoes are cheap today at the market.”
